The problem with having a silly image in a rock band is, once the novelty wears off you might start to feel the pressure to shed that very same image that helped mark you out from the pack in the first place. On "The Story Of A Young Heart" A Flock Of Seagulls get more of a trim than Mike Score's ridiculous-but-fun melted aircraft carrier-look hairdo does, as the band take several steps back away from their prior, more technologically-heavy sound (as heard on "Listen") and deliver a more or less straightforward set of songs; and the best of the songs here recall the basic propulsive thrust of Flock's breakthrough 1982 debut record. The problem is, while Mike Score's haircut had probably become more of a hindrance than a help to the band's chances of gaining longevity, especially in the States (meaning he was wise in trying to change it), the band's boy wonder guitarist Paul Reynolds especially sounds somewhat reined in here; which is a shame, because Reynolds always was AFOS's secret weapon, although he does excel himself on the memorable lead single, The More You Live, The More You Love. But there's no escaping the fact that, even across the grooves of this brilliant, stirring single, there isn't much to distinguish AFOS from many of the other techno-rock bands now breaking through into America, ironically on the back of the Seagulls' own success there (both in the charts and on MTV). So there is a strong argument that A Flock Of Seagulls' appeal was to some degree based on novelty, although AFOS's knack for a good tune and arrangement still shines brightly across the album's nine dramatic tracks. (The album's poor performance in the US charts must have been a disappointment for AFOS, given all the hard work the band put in to touring there.) Artistically the sonic change works to AFOS's advantage, because it plays to their strengths as an ensemble band, and helps to enhance a sense of stripped back mystery on some of the LPs more contemplative tracks (European (I Wish I Was); Heart Of Steel). The penultimate track, The End, meanwhile, ranks as one of Flock's best single band performances, and provides a suitably gloomy yet uplifting musical pivot to the loose suite of themed songs on the album's flip side (Remember David and Suicide Day both explicitly refer to the suicide of a close friend of the band's). And although the sound of the album is a little thin at the production end, highlighting Mike Score's limited vocal range, nevertheless "The Story Of A Young Heart" is an album that, like the overlooked single Never Again (The Dancer), grows in its appeal with every listen, even if unfortunately the record does mark the end of the line for A Flock Of Seagulls, both commercially and creatively.
