Review by R. Rosa

Tom Scott & The LA Express's self-titled album is a must-listen for any jazz-funk enthusiast. Released in 1974, the album features the band's signature sound, which is a fusion of jazz, funk, and rock. Tom Scott's saxophone playing is flawless, and the LA Express's backing is tight and groovy.

The album's opening track, "Rock Island Rocket," sets the tone with its upbeat tempo and catchy melody. "Refried," another standout track, showcases the band's funkier side with its driving bassline and infectious rhythm. "Nite Creatures" is a slower, more atmospheric track that highlights Scott's ability to convey emotion through his playing.

The album's production is also noteworthy, with each instrument and sound perfectly balanced. The LA Express's backing vocals on "Appolonia" add another layer of depth to the album.

I'm telling you, the late John Guerin on drums and Max Bennett on bass formed one helluva rhythm section!!!

Remember this song being the background music for a head shop in Avon back in the seventies. Still sounds great.

Wow, i just realized, this was produced, perhaps, to allow his right ear to hear it, while performing it, in the studio (?), but could not, at that time be ‘turned back around’ ? Unless, Tom Scott is as ‘left-eared,’ as i am (!), or, the production, Planned it that way, for effect. (Or, ‘Sony, no baloney...’. earbuds ??? lol :) ) It’s sooo greattttt !???

I'm doing a backing track for this one, for smoothjazzbackingtracks.com. got my work cut out for me, with Larry Carlton's guitar, Joe Sample, Max Bennett, and Joe Sample.

This was one of my favorite bands growing up. I saw them live at the North Hollwood Library, in North Hollywood, California. Listening to this makes me wonder if they had any idea how far their careers would go. Musical drummer!
